What's Blooming at Plant Odyssey!

Hey y’all.

Hope you have enjoyed the lovely rain followed by beautiful days. What a gift after experiencing one of the coldest winters in a long time! Thanks to the hard work of Marina, Jason and Charlie, we have lots of perennials that wintered over and are ready to go in the ground. These babies are as tough as they come, are now in their second year, and want to go home with you to beautify your garden. The selection is superb.

I am having a great time ordering from growers who have been busy all winter long to bring you plants that have been well tended. Most of the growers are located in state (BUY LOCAL) with a small percentage coming from Georgia and Florida . None of my growers sell to Lowe’s, Home Depot or Wal-Mart, a fact of which I’m proud. Fully acclimated to our climate, spending little time being hauled on a truck and being given the best growing conditions possible - all add up to your success. Come see what they have provided for you to buy—the selection will impress you.

We are almost finished with the improvements, but still have a little way to go. The new sidewalks make walking out back easier, the carts more manageable, the plants reachable. It is so nice to hear the compliments we are receiving—it makes all the hard work worth the effort. We are now building tables to display an extensive selection of herbs, vegetables, annuals and perennials. Some shifting is occurring but we are in a race against time to be finished for the Open House on April the 9th. Browse the new fruit tree, blueberry and citrus section, the vignettes against the far wall and the new hanging basket section. We hope you enjoy all the neat plants and merchandise.

It is way too early to plant tender basil and tomatoes although we do have them available. It is safe to plant lettuce, cabbage, collards, kale, cauliflower, strawberries, pak choi plus any perennial herb (rosemary, thyme, lavender). If you love cilantro and dill plant now as they will not grow when it gets hot.

Store hours have been extended for the spring season. We are now open from 8:30 to 5:30 Mon-Sat and 1-5 on Sunday. Hope to see you in the garden!

An Invitation to Sit in my Garden..
.

Hey y'all. It has been too cold, too dreary, too yucky a month for me to feel like writing, so I've been been moving around every plant, pot, and piece of furniture I can get my hands on; painting, cleaning, fluffing, any activity to get me out of a funk. And I am so pleased with the results. You have to come by and see the transformation! The work was accomplished by teamwork: Marina, Jason, Charlie, Amy, Barry and I. We worked, laughed, discussed, and created during this dreary month. You are invited to bring your lunch and sit in the greenhouse in our new peaceful space, surrounded by great beauty. Or just come and sit for a few minutes, inhale the fresh air, and relax. We look forward to sharing our space with you.

Jimsey Bailey, an incredibly talented woman, not only manages my Facebook page, she is responsible for the videos being produced and available for viewing on my website, www.LibbysPlantOdyssey.com, and Facebook. Once a month, there will be a new video on topics that I consider important. If you have any ideas, suggestions or requests, please let me know.

It seems I have been remiss in not offering you the opportunity to be removed from my email list. If you wish to do so, reply to any email with "unsubscribe" in the subject line. Thanks and please accept my apologies if you're receiving this email again because some requests were lost in the process of updating our email lists.

Look forward to seeing you soon,

Libby

This Holiday Season

Hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving or lived through it with as little damage as possible. Mine was wonderful; full of laughter, love, good food and gratitude that once more I had my husband with me to share a holiday. We have wonderful wreaths and garlands, lots of unique holiday decorations for your home - all different sizes and shapes and very reasonably priced.

I know as an independent, my hours are not that of the big boxes; but I also know they cannot match my quality or the level of my service. Please take a moment or two to shop with your independent neighborhood businesses. The money you spend stays local and keeps another small business around for you to enjoy. Whether it is a restaurant, a knit shop, a bookstore or a gallery, please earmark some money to spend with an independent. We have all lost some of our favorite small businesses. Let's make sure we do our part.

I hope to see you at the holidays, but if by chance I'm not here when you come in, know that I wish you a Merry Christmas and I Thank You for allowing me to stay in business for 36 years.

With my Love,

Libby

Weds.10-27-10

It's Sunday night. All day I have waited for the rain every forecaster had promised. 100 percent chance of rain, which the earth needs so badly but so does my soul. And it hasn't arrived. Now Bridget (one of my dogs) and I are sitting on the porch watching the force of nature display herself. Huge clouds are continually lit up by lightning, the air trembles with the thunder that follows so close behind. Trees bend heavily, and yet there is no rain. Surely, I think, there is rain on the way; surely I can will it across the valley. And so we sit, waiting, hopeful and patient. And then, suddenly, the rain arrives, wave after wave.I smile and relax, breath deeply and then I laugh. Bridget is whining, asking to go inside. And so we go into the house, but not before I have raised my hands to the heavens and given thanks.

PLANT ODYSSEY...A PLACE WHERE GARDENERS CAN DREAM

Each month, we'll sum it up for you right here: What's blooming at Plant Odyssey, what's new and news. So if you're not on Facebook or Linked In, no worries, you can visit us anytime at our website.

Want something a little different for your Halloween party? We have the perfect answer: orange pots with black peppers will make your decorations unique. Or black pansies inserted into pumpkin pots. Or beautiful orange dahlias placed outside your door to greet your guests or trick or treaters. We have lots of options and suggestions.

My Japanese maples are beginning to turn colors--red and orange and yellow foliage brings color to the sun greenhouses. Stop by to admire them and enjoy their display. Follow the fragrance to the sweet olives in bloom, bury your nose in one of the plants and inhale their perfume. And finally, allow your hand to stroke the branches of the yews so you can appreciate their softness.

We have an excellent selection of fall veggies and lettuces with plenty of time left to bring in a crop. Several of the lettuces are so pretty you should use them as decoration rather than eat them!

If you are in the area at 8:30-10:00 come watch the bumblebees sleeping on their "bed" of choice slowly awaken as the sun warms their bodies. It is amazing to watch.

See the photos below...

Isabelle, a white dove, wanders around the front room in a very casual fashion, pecking here and there, pausing occasionally to coo and then resuming her journey. The house mother of a local fraternity brought her to me because she and the bird did not want any further mistreatment to occur. She will not bite, rarely takes to the air and scurries away if you try to approach. Her new friend is Bob....another rescue who is temporarily residing in the front room. Her owner was diagnosed with a very serious and perhaps fatal condition and asked me to take her. She dances to the song Bob bob bob, Barbara Ann, which is really very funny. Bob is fourteen, very reserved and freaks out when someone gets too close to her cage.

Thank y'all in advance for understanding about my rescue efforts.

And now for some of the treats I purchased on my travels this summer. The sun greenhouse has been completely redone and we are thrilled with the results. I feel as though when I start down the path I will wind up in the forest. It beckons you to come see what is around the corner.

Tiny treasures invite your admiration and touch. Perfect for bonsai or for year round container gardens, these miniatures steal your heart at a glance.

Come, walk through my garden.
