Life in the plant world was so much simpler when I first began working in the industry. Growers would show up once a week bringing with them their prettiest plants. You’d hop on the truck, make your selection, socialize for a minute or two, go in write a check and then wait for the next truck to arrive. It has been years since that time and in some ways I miss the intimacy of times gone by. Now availability lists are online or sent by fax--you check what you want and rarely have any contact with the grower. And that’s not all. Thousands of new plants have been introduced, thousands more “improved”, thousands more dropped from propagation lists, thousands more with brand new classifications and new names. What is a woman to do? With regard to the availability lists my habit was to buy, buy, and buy. I wanted it all. But that behavior led to a variety of problems, particularly when the behavior had gone on for years and years. Aisles were so tight customers had trouble walking; the plants were always well cared for but difficult to find and plants were frequently not priced. Some customers grew frustrated and left. I am not saying the practice has completely halted, after all one does not change overnight, but I will tell you change has taken place. The plants are now up on benches within easy reach, the aisles are wider and much less crowded and almost always the plants are priced—no one is perfect. I still carry a vast array of plants; I just don’t purchase lots of the same variety. If you need quantity, special orders are gladly welcomed. If you are looking for a specific plant and we don’t have it in stock, I’ll be happy to see if it is available and order it for you.
