One of my favorite authors of medieval mysteries posed this task to a novice in one of her books: “Go into the fields and seek plants that have no medicinal use.” The novice returned days later and said “I am sorry to have failed you Master, but I found no plants without medicinal use.” I cannot begin to imagine the vast knowledge we have lost due to fear, intolerance, ignorance, industrialization, greed, the lust for power, expansion and extinction. How sad I am that we have lost all that knowledge! We threw away or destroyed, in a few hundred years, what it took people from all different cultures and all different lands thousands of years to learn and perfect. I cannot begin to imagine what knowledge we have lost through the slaughter of wise women in the Dark ages, the burning of transcripts in the Middle Ages and pharmaceutical companies withholding vital information in the name of profit in our modern times. Now some of us are returning to the “old ways”, realizing the wonderful gifts the earth has provided are better than or, at least as good as, the synthetic drugs available through huge pharmaceutical companies. Listed below are most of the culinary and medicinal herbs I stock in the spring, summer and fall. Because I am not qualified nor am I licensed to teach you how to use the herbs in a medicinal fashion, you will find medicinal herbs in amongst other perennials. Culinary herbs are grouped together, and not being a culinary expert, I can advise you how to grow them, but please consult your recipe books for usage. If you can’t find the plant you are looking for, please ask for assistance.
